The Pit: Understanding Behaviour Change
You can download the activity here.
The Pit: Understanding Behaviour Change is a reflective activity developed by MyCWA to support people in understanding the emotional and behavioural process of change.
The activity focuses on what can happen when someone tries to change a behaviour that has led to harm, difficulty, or unwanted consequences. It recognises that change is rarely a straight line and that many people experience similar stages along the way - including setbacks, frustration, and gradual progress.
Using a worksheet format, The Pit invites participants to explore this pattern at their own pace. It encourages honest reflection on thoughts, feelings, and actions that arise during behaviour change, helping individuals normalise the experience rather than viewing challenges as failure.
The aim of the activity is to:
Build insight into personal behaviour patterns
Increase understanding of the emotional impact of change
Support accountability without shame
Encourage persistence and self-compassion during the change process
Overall, The Pit provides a practical and supportive framework for reflecting on behaviour change in a safe, structured, and non-judgemental way.
